Description

Ski jumping also has historic routes. Modern day techniques have lead the sport to simulate flying more then jumping. In Ski Jumping competitions, points are given to the participants based on both distance and style.

Style is judged by 5 judges who can give up to 20 points for style.

Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Update

Whistler Olympic Park opened the ski jumping venue and hosted the inaugural Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined events January 2-5th. The first jump on the Normal Hill occurred on Dec 27th with Gregory Baxter being the first athlete off of the hill. The Large Hill was opened by Stefan Read on January 4th.

The venue was buried in snow with an average of 40cm arriving on a daily basis. Even with the heavy snowfall the venue received great reviews by athletes and coaches alike. New hill records were set with Stefan Read of Canada setting the mark on the large hill of 133 meters and Lindsay Van of the USA setting the Normal Hill record of 105.5 meters. The events were exciting and well attended by spectators and media.

The CALOC team did an exceptional job and showed their talents and ingenuity in running an excellent first ski jumping event. We are looking forward to the exciting FIS CUP and CONTINENTAL CUP Ski Jumping events Feb 27-Mar 2.

Government of Canada: Settlement Reached in Women's Ski Jumping Complaint

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 8, 2008) - The Honourable Helena Guergis, Secretary of State (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) (Sport), today announced that a settlement has been reached regarding a complaint filed with the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) by Jan Willis, on behalf of her daughter and other women ski jumpers, stating that a previous decision to exclude women ski jumpers from competition at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver was discriminatory. The settlement is the result of collaborative work between the Department of Canadian Heritage, Ms. Willis, and the CHRC.

The agreement is based on a shared intent to pursue Canada's commitment and leadership in the advancement and equality of women in sport. The settlement commits the parties to work together and with other key parties to explore how the International Olympic Committee (IOC) may be approached to reconsider its decision not to include women's ski jumping in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The settlement was reached with the help of a mediator from the CHRC. The CHRC encourages parties to human rights disputes to use mediation as a means to get a better understanding of each other's positions and to address the needs and interests that are key to finding a mutually agreeable solution. Mediation is voluntary and is quicker, less adversarial, less expensive, and less time-consuming than investigation or litigation.

"The Government of Canada is pleased that this issue has been resolved," said Secretary of State Guergis. "The Government supports the inclusion and equality of women in sport, and we are committed to ensuring our policy on women and sport continues to be effective in increasing the involvement of women in the Canadian sport system."

"We are proud that the federal government has taken a leadership role in the promotion of gender equity in sport, and we welcome it as a partner in working towards the inclusion of women's ski jumping in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver," said Jan Willis. "There is a mature international competition circuit for top-level jumpers, with over 80 women from 14 nations participating. Our Canadian jumpers are among the best in the world. We look forward to working with the federal government and other stakeholders to urge the IOC and International Ski Federation to reconsider the decision."

Fly Into 2010

Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Canada are pleased to be offering officials training courses for individuals who are interested in volunteering at Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined events leading up to, and including, the 2010 games. There are going to be both theory and practical sessions throughout the fall and winter. Theory sessions will be occurring in Vancouver, Squamish and Whistler; while the practical training will be held at the Whistler Nordic Venue in the Callaghan Valley, the site of the 2010 games.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about ski jumping and Nordic combined and become a ski jumping volunteer or official. In addition, participants in the September session will also get a chance to sneak a peak at the new Olympic ski jumps.

Registration is based on a first come first serve basis and is limited to the first fifteen people registered.

These pictures were taken in the last few weeks, and show some of the rehabilitation work their parents are assisting with as volunteers. The photos show how the jumps progress from introductory sizes to the large hill, as well as what the summer jumping surface looks like.
