Biathlon Bus Program
CALOC and The Chief have partnered together to sponsor the Biathlon Bus program, which is a program which will send 1400 students primarily from Squamish to the Biathlon World Cup in March at Whistler Olympic Park. For many children this will be the one and only opportunity for them to witness a pre-Olympic test event with the athletes, coaches, course and action of the Olympic games at no cost to them or their families. Bussing youths to this event is a natural progression from developing and implementing the Teacher's Guide on Biathlon, which CALOC developed in the summer and made available to all interested schools in the Province at no charge.

An addition to this program is "Warm for World Cup" where funds raised for buses have been allocated to ensure all local students who attended the Biathlon World Cup will be clothed appropriately as this opportunity will be given to all students in grades four to nine many of whom are not be in a financial position to be clothed appropriately for a winter's day in the Callaghan.

The experience will have as much of the Olympic buzz as possible includes transportation on charter buses, noise makers, international flags, cheering local fan clubs, large viewing screens to catch the action and replays, the presence of international media, music and moderation. Biathlon is the highest viewed winter sport in Europe ensuring many television networks will be present to catch the action.

The hope of this program beyond giving children an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is to inspire them to be active, to reach for goals and dreams, to look after their bodies with sound nutrition and exercise. This program as well as the Teacher' Guide program attempt to draw links between sport, art and education to ensure these things elements complement each other. The Biathlon Bus program will also bring awareness to Whistler Olympic Park and highlight it as a complementary recreation to a new generation of local athletes.

In addition to support by The Chief the Biathlon Bus program has also been supported by VANOC, International Coach Lines of Richmond, Squamish Terminals, Merlin Air, MirEAU, Garibaldi at Squamish, Capilano University, Squamish Rotary, Save-On-Foods, Muff & Doug Hackett, and Ultimate Promotions. CALOC will gladly accept additional donations to support this program.

The e.on Runrgas IBU World Cup Biathlon will be the last opportunity to watch World Cup Nordic action in the Callaghan this year. The World Cup will take place at Whistler Olympic Park March 11 - 15th. Admission for all events are free.
